A Few Things To Take Care When You Have A Pet Bird
Birds
are the most popular pets in the USA after dogs and cats. Kids especially are
fond of avian pets because of their colorful bodies, or may be because they can
fly. Some people prefer birds to other pets simply because they can be life
time companions as they have a life span of 10-80 years.
Whatsoever
the reason of having a feathered pet may be, it is important to take care of
your bird just like other pets. From their diet to their surroundings, you may
need to keep an eye on every detail of your pet bird. Following are a few
things that need to be taken care of when you have bird pet:
Want your birds to be comfortable? Have a
look at these Aspects!
Diet guidelines- Seeds are not enough!
Just
like humans and other pets, birds too need a balanced diet to lead a healthy
life. Improper diet induces issues like obesity, egg binding and vitamin A
deficiency in birds. If you are feeding seeds as the sole diet to your bird
then you are making a big mistake. Your bird needs a perfect balance between
seeds (all kinds), fruits and vegetables. Birds love sunflower seeds and oats.
They may filter them and eat from the mixed seeds platter. It is essential that
you make sure if your avian friend has it all, fruits, seeds and vegetables.
Surrounding guidelines- Let them soar high!
Birds
have wings so that they can fly! Flying is their thing and thus it is ethically
not correct that you cage your bird 24/7. Make your home bird friendly, or at
least construct their own room with a bird tree, nest, cage and a small indoor
garden. In a room like this, your bird may have a great time. Make sure you buy
a broad cage for your pet bird as they need to exercise their wings. Let your
bird fly in the open for an hour or so to keep them healthy.
Atmospheric Guidelines- Keep the air clean!
Nicotine
is extremely hazardous to birds! Hence smoking should be strictly avoided near
your birds. If you think that you can get away safely by smoking on the other
side of the room then you are mistaken. Birds are extremely sensitive and
therefore it is recommended to smoke in altogether a different room that has a
proper air circulation.
Birds
also need adequate light as they require natural sunlight for vitamin D. Keep
the windows open rather than creating dark covers during the day. Similarly,
birds also need a complete blackout for 10-12 hours at night. If their room is
not efficient in providing it then you may need to get a blackout cover ready
for your bird’s convenience.
These
were the basic, yet most important aspects to take care of when you have bird
as a pet. The other things to change are perches and companionship. Perches
should be of natural wood to protect your bird’s claws. Birds are extremely
social and needs attention which is why it is better to have more than one bird
as a pet.
