7 Tips for Summer Pet Care

In summers, elevating temperatures and scorching heat can dehydrate our pets severely when overlooked. It is the season when most of our time is spent outdoors with our families and pets enjoying barbeques and picnics. Our pets are thus more exposed to direct sun rays and heat in summers than any other season. Therefore, it is immensely important to safeguard them from getting heatstroke and sunburns. Here are some tips that you must follow to take proper care of your furry companion when the sun is tyrannous.

Plenty Of Water Access
The foremost thing to keep in mind in summers is to hydrate your pet. Your furry pal must constantly have access to cool water that would help combat the heat. Dehydrated pets often pant heavily, so make sure to check your pet time to time and keep the water supply in his vicinity to ensure he consumes enough water throughout the sunny day.

Apply A Generous Layer Of Sunscreen
Do you know pets are more prone to getting sunburns than us? Their body is exposed to heat more often than ours because there is no gadget to protect them from sun rays. Therefore, it is better to apply a pet sunscreen whenever you go out with your furry on a sunny day.  It protects the skin from getting burnt and reduces the risk of skin cancer as well.

Prevent Him From Parasites

As the temperatures surge, fleas, ticks, and other insects become extremely active and cause many diseases in pets. Therefore, prevention in advance would be a wise decision. Start giving the preventatives before the summer approaches. And, you can continue them for the rest of the year. This is because fleas and ticks can persistently recur if the eggs and larvae are not eliminated efficiently from the surroundings.

Do Not Clear His Mane

Extremely short hair exposes his coat to the blazing heat of the sun. If the hair is kept long, the skin gets minimum exposure which prevents it from getting sunburns. Therefore, maintain a thick coat of your furry pal in summers, regularly wash them with a good shampoo and detangle with a comb.

Do Not Walk Your Dog On Heated Surface
Avoid taking the paths that are overheated during sunny days. This is because pets generally pick up heat from their paws and can get seriously ill due to overexposure. Moreover, refrain yourself from taking them out in peak temperatures which is generally between 2-4 PM.

Do Not Leave Your Pet In the Car
A closed car even with window shades open can heat up very quickly. This leads to panting in dogs as they aren’t able to inhale fresh oxygen and exhale appropriate amount of carbon dioxide. If the pet is left in the heated car unattended, it can even prove deadly for him.

  Check For Heatstroke Signs

If you see a pet panting heavily, drooling excessively or vomiting, instantly cover him with a damp rug. And take him under a cool shade. Check if he is suffering from diarrhea and take veterinary help immediately. You can also switch on the AC and keep him inside the room to lower down his body temperature.

Summers can only be fun for your pet if he is kept well-hydrated, well-fed and under shades. So, take these measures diligently and enjoy the weekends without having to worry about your pet’s health this summer.
