Now Dog Owners can Enjoy Outdoor Dining with their Dogs in New York

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - In June 2015, the New York State Senate passed legislation that would enable restaurant patrons’ dogs to roam in the outdoor dining areas. The “Dining with Dogs” bill passed by the assembly would enable customers to get their pets into outdoor dining areas of the restaurant that wish to provide this service. But care should be taken by the restaurant that there will not be any contamination of food and tainted utensils or equipment. Dogs would be required to be leashed and any authority can choose not to allow pets in the outdoor dining areas.

There are several restaurants in the USA that already allow dogs to accompany their pet-parents for outdoor meals. One of the prominent places include Bridge View Tavern in Sleepy Hollow, which plans to open a dog-friendly beer garden in a couple of month’s time. According to the owner of the place, Chris M. “Pet dogs are a regular feature, especially on weekends that are sunny and there has never been a problem with any of the pet-free guests who are out there to enjoy their meals.”

According to him, “We have a dog-friendly place and we have never come across any issues till now”. He further added that “The rules for pets are similar to kids and if any pet is being uncooperative or difficult, we speak to the pet-parents.”

Another owner at Tramonto in Hawthorne said, “We have lot of wonderful customers visiting us. There are some who feel that pets should not be allowed in restaurants. Hence, when a customer comes with a pet we give them a seat near the window so they can watch him and ensure that everything is OK.”

According to the new rule, restaurant employees would not be allowed to be in direct contact with dogs while on duty. A separate outdoor entrance needs to be provided to the pets so that they do not infringe the establishment while coming out of the restaurant. On top of it, the outdoor dining area should not be used for food or drink preparation or utensil storage. A similar legislation was passed in California with tremendous support recently.
